Carreño wins Masters 1000 in Montreal

The Gijón Open 2022 ambassador scores the most important win of his career, with a comeback win against Hubert Hurkacz in the final of the Canadian Open

Pablo Carreño, one of the first confirmed entries of the Gijón Open 2022, has claimed the most important title of his career in Montreal this week by winning his first ever ATP Masters 1000 title. In Sunday’s final, he overcame Hubert Hurkacz 3-6 6-3 6-3.

"I have worked very hard throughout my career to experience a moment like this. It has been very difficult, but I have had a great week. I have played at a high level and have been always positive. I feel very happy about this victory", he acknowledged after the match.

Carreño becomes the third Spaniard to lift the Canadian ATP Masters 1000 trophy after Manuel Orantes (1975) and Rafael Nadal (2005, 2008, 2013, 2018 & 2019).

This is now the seventh title of his career, and he climbs nine positions in the ATP ranking to No. 14, putting him on the brink of returning to his best ranking of No. 10.

On his way to the title in Canada, the Spaniard beat two Top-20 players, namely Matteo Berretini #14 (6-3 6-2) and Jannik Sinner #12 (6-2 6 -4), reaching the semifinals without dropping a set.
