Carreno's Time Has Come

Local hero will make his debut on the Centre Court in front of his home crowd.

The moment that local fans have long been waiting for has finally arrived: the debut of their hometown hero Pablo Carreño at the Gijon Open ATP 250. He will be featured in the fourth match scheduled on Centre Court on Wednesday.

He will face the Brazilian Thiago Monteiro, who took out Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi in the first round. To add to the feel-good factor, it will be the first time that his grandmother will have the opportunity to see him play in person.

Carreño is playing in Gijón as the second seed in the draw. He’s coming off the back of a strong hardcourt season, which was highlighted by his seventh ATP title at the Masters 1000 in Montreal. He was also an Olympic bronze medalist last year in Tokyo.

Other big names on Centre Court

Carreño will have warmed up the crowd for Dominic Thiem, who will make a welcome return to Centre Court directly after Spaniard. The former world number three is hoping to regain some of the form that earned him his US Open title in 2020.

Young gun Sebastian Korda will make his first appearance in Gijón, and will take to the court against Spaniard Jaume Munar. Fifth-seeded Tommy Paul will also begin his campaign tomorrow. The American will take on Spanish qualifier Nicolas Alvarez Varona in round two.

If that wasn't enough, there will be more singles action as well as plenty of doubles action on Court 1.
