Dominic Thiem Headlines Day 1 Action
Landaluce, Baez and former US Open champ Thiem all set to debut on Monday
The 2022 Gijón Open ATP 250 takes off tomorrow, as main draw matches are set to begin featuring former Grand Slam champion Dominic Thiem and young Spanish NextGen hope, Martin Landaluce.
All eyes on Thiem
Thiem, entering the event with a protected ranking after a long layoff due to a wrist injury, will play in the third match on centre court against Portuguese #1 and world #62, Joao Souza. This match will be immediately followed by the much anticipated ATP Tour debut of 16-year-old Martin Landaluce.
Landaluce makes his ATP debut
The youngster from Madrid won his first Junior Grand Slam in New York barely two months ago and is playing in his first ever ATP main draw match thanks to a wildcard offered by the Spanish Tennis Federation. In what may be a tough assignment, he will face American fifth seed Tommy Paul, a quarterfinalist at summer hardcourts events in Atlanta and also in Montreal where he took out current world #1 and US Open champ Carlos Alcaraz in the second round.
To kick off proceedings Benjamin Bonzi of France will take on Brazilian Thiago Monteiro. Waiting in the wings to take to court upon completion of the first match will be another young talent in the form of seventh seed Sebastian Baez (ARG) who will play Constant Lestienne (FRA). The Argentinian world #35 will be looking for strong hardcourt result to add to his three clay court titles in 2022.
Doubles and more
Three doubes matched will also get underway on court 1, and will feature second seeded Italians Simone Bolelli & Fabio Fognini. The doubles will be followed by the last singles match of the day.
