Grand Slam winner Dominic Thiem comes to Gijón

The former world #3 will seek to get back the form which won him the US Open crown in 2020 and got him to the Roland Garros and Australian Open finals

The Gijón Open ATP 250 has confirmed today that the former No.3 and 2020 US Open champion, Dominic Thiem, will be one of the biggest names of the tournament to be held from October 8 to 16 at the Palacio de Deportes La Guía.

The Austrian joins the entries already announced by the organizers, all of them former Top 10 players: Spaniards Pablo Carreño and Roberto Bautista, Italian Fabio Fognini and Belgian David Goffin.

Dominic Thiem will come to Gijón thanks to his protected ranking, granted because he was recovering from a serious wrist injury he suffered last year, when he was in the Top 5.

After nine months off, the 29-year-old Austrian returned last March at the ATP Challenger in Marbella. Since then, he has reached the semi-final in Gstaad, and the quarterfinals in Kitzbuhel and Bastad.

He has won 17 titles on tour so far. The last of them was the most important, at the US Open (2020), after having previously reached three other Grand Slam finals at Roland Garros (2018 and 2019) and the Australian Open (2020).

The official entry list for this first edition of the Gijón Open will be announced next week.
