Historic First-Ever Match Gets the Ball Rolling in Gijón

The inaugural Gijón open is officially under way, with a historic first match of this new ATP Tour event being played on centre court. In the qualifying draw, top-seeded Spaniard Carlos Taberner (pictured, left) is taking on Romanian Filip Cristian Jianu in the debut match.

Meanwhile, over on court 1, seventh-seeded Alexey Vatutin faces wildcard recipient Alberto Barroso (ESP). Each match will be followed by three further matches, with the winners of each match advancing into tomorrow's final round of qualifying. Today's matches feature sevel Spanish players and nine from abroad.

At 6:30pm the main draw ceremony will take place outside on the mini tennis court, featuring recent US Open Junior champ Martin Landaluce (ESP).
