Thursday Preview: Top seeds debut, Murray returns.
In what will be a day jam-packed of top-flight tennis at the Gijón Open ATP 250, four big names will grace Centre Court tomorrow, three of them for the first time.
Three of the top four seeds will be making their debut on day 4, with young Argentine Francisco Cerundolo up first. The 2022 Bastad champ will face French qualifer, Manuel Guinard, Fabio Fognini’s conquerer and the only remaining qualifier in Gijón.
This will be followed by the return of a resurgent Andy Murray, beneficiary of another wildcard. He will tee off against another Argentinian, Pedro Cachin in the second match on Centre Court and will be looking to book himself a spot in the quarterfinals.
In the afternoon session top seed and world #9 Andrey Rublev gets his campaign off and running, and will face Ilya Ivashka. The friends have clashed in two previous encounters on the ATP Tour, with victory going to Rublev on both occasions.
“We know each others’ game really well, so it will be a very interesting match.” Vying for a fourth title in 2022, the Moscow native is also hoping to sneak in some precious points to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin.
The last Round-of-16 match to close out Thursday’s session will feature another local favourite in the form of Roberto Bautista Agust, the number three seed. He will face the young American Sebastian Korda who looked very solid in his win today.
Plenty of doubles action will take place on Court 1, featuring well-known names like Jamie Murray and Fabio Fognini. Below is the full run-down of tomorrow's schedule.
