3,400 spectators enjoyed a day that had it all, from an injured Italian star, to an upset of a top Spanish seed, the triumph of a living legend and even a sentimental local favorite who played one of his final matches
In the first match of the day, Fabio Fognini was forced to retire against French qualifier Manuel Guinard. This was followed by another upset of sorts when American Marcos Giron took out the more fancied number eight seed from Spain Albert Ramos in a come-from-behind three set win. In the afternoon session, Andy Murray made the most of his wildcard and got the better of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in their first ever meeting.
A lover of fast, indoor hardcourts, the Scotsman took the match in straight sets and had plenty to say on court after the match about his performance, not to mention the city of Gijón: "I still enjoy playing but the young guys move so well it’s difficult for me to keep up with them! The crowd was fantastic and there was a wonderful atmosphere. I really enjoy playing in new places. I’ve never been here before and it’s a beautiful place, so I'm happy to be here, even though I was terrible at trying to pour the local cider yesterday."
Murray’s match was followed by an encounter featuring another wildcard recipient. Spanish veteran Feliciano López faced Ilya Ivashka, and despite a spirited second set comeback, Ivashka dashed Spanish hopes once again with his 6-3 6-7 6-4 win. Over on Court 1, qualifier Nicolas Alvarez Varona notched a win that gave the locals something to smile about, being the only Spanish player to post a win today. He beat fellow qualifier Marco Trungelleti to advance to round two. To close out the day, Gijón local Pablo was the protagonist of a doubles match in which he partnered Joao Sousa. The Iberian pairing fell to their Argenitine opponents in straight sets.
